Week 2 of my retreat in Scarborough - my writing week

Last week and this week I've been in my happy place of Scarborough in Yorkshire, but I'm not here on holiday. I'm here to write and work. I'm writing book four in my Scarborough cosy crime series and making very good progress, with no distractions.  Whilst here, I'm walking each day and making the most of the scenery as inspiration for my scenes in the book.

While in Scarborough this week I was invited to The Cumberland Hotel by Alfa Travel to give a talk on my books, for charity Re-engage. This was a wonderful event and I even met a lady with the same name as me!

I travelled in style on the Central Tramway Funicular where one of my books is set. Books are for sale at the top station of the funicular too!

And although I'll be leaving Scarborough at the end of this week to travel home, I will take a piece of Scarborough with me. Treated myself to this wonderful coaster to place on my writing desk at home.

Week 1 of my retreat in Scarborough - my writing week

This week (and next) I'm in my happy place of Scarborough in Yorkshire, but I'm not here on holiday. I'm here to write and work.  I'm writing book four in my Scarborough cosy crime series and making very good progress, with no distractions.  Whilst here, I'm walking each day and making the most of the scenery as inspiration for my scenes in the book.

Speaking of scenes in the books, here's the bench that Helen Dexter sits on, when you imagine her fictional Seaview Hotel on the clifftop!

I called into Scarborough library to drop off free bookmarks and postcards. While there, I picked up the festival brochure for the Books by the Beach this year in town. I'm speaking on Friday 7 June at 3pm, all welcome, but tickets must be booked in advance.

One of my daily walks around Scarborough brought me to one of my favourite spots.

And I was included in The Scarborough News article about the Books by the Beach festival too.

The first professional review is in for The Toffee Factory Girls.  And it's the first 5 star review I've ever been given by the prestigious Karen Byrom. You can read the full review here.

Jumping back to Books by the Beach festival, here's the t-shirt I plan to wear. When you know...you know!

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.

Busy Bridlington, Short Story and Taking the Plunge - my writing week

This week has been very busy.  I've been to the Yorkshire seaside town of Bridlington where I was invited to speak at SpringFest in Bridlington library on a crime panel with author Kate Evans, chaired by author Nick Quantrill. Here I am at Bridlington library on the crime panel and under this pic are more details of their wonderful Springfest Festival of Words.

Whilst in Bridlington, I signed books for the gorgeous Book Nook bookshop in the Old Town and met some readers too, always wonderful!

I also had a short story published in The Sunday Post's P.S. Magazine.

And this week I finished writing up my chapter plans for my next cosy crime set in Scarborough. It's always a scary moment to begin a new book, like taking the plunge from a high diving board and not knowing if you'll sink or swim. I'll begin writing next week once the busy-ness of this week has calmed from my mind.

My new saga The Toffee Factory Girls was included in New Writing North's spring bookshelf of Northern books.

And gave a talk to a WI group about my books, which went down really well. Such a lovely group and the WI are always friendly and welcoming, supportive too.

Also this week I was announced as part of the line-up for this year's Scarborough book festival - Books by the Beach. Join me for a slice of Jean's homemade cake and a Scarborough Sunrise cocktail (as featured in Foul Play at the Seaview Hotel).  I'll be at the Crescent Hotel!  All details here.

I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016 and you can find out all about it here.

I also kept the Coronation Street Blog ticking over with news and editing the team of 16 bloggers.
